Designing an infinite canvas for creative production

Why creative nodes should feel like production objects rather than tiny technical boxes.

01

The canvas should reveal the work

A creative graph is easier to understand when each node communicates its role, possible actions and current state. Large, readable cards can carry meaning without forcing the user into an inspector immediately.

02

Add nodes where the idea happens

Double-clicking an empty location creates a direct relationship between intention and placement. The menu should include common media, story, direction and resource choices without unnecessary categories.

03

Separate workspaces from data nodes

A director or edit timeline may need a full-screen workspace, while scripts and continuity references work naturally as connected nodes. Gateway nodes let both patterns coexist.

04

Preserve navigation confidence

Panning, zooming, selecting and connecting must remain predictable. The graph should make scale and state visible without covering the work with menus.

FAQ

Questions creators ask

Why not put every tool in one sidebar?

A long sidebar hides relationships. Nodes make project-specific tools visible exactly where they are used.

Do larger nodes reduce canvas space?

They use more space but improve legibility. Good zoom, panning and layout defaults preserve overview while keeping each object useful.
